Here in Australia, they usually let us try it out before buying one. I did
this with a compact-flash adapter for a 1400c. Maybe take your trusty Mac
into whatever shop is nearby and try it out (you don't have to BUY it there
of course, just try it :-)

The USB ones work great, plus, they are quite compact, and not at all
expensive...
