I seem to get my boot partition pretty ragged just as
quickly in OS9.1 - mostly because I've been
downloading lots lately to a folder within it. 

I like to run Diskwarrior and PlusOptimiser (they
still come bundled together?) at least once a month. 
Never had a disk go down in the years since I've done
that, except for mechanical failure of a bad drive.
