When I've attempted to do this, the predictable outcome was that the visible display shrunk down so that there was a huge black box outside the desktop. The only way I've found to keep the desktop at full screen is at 1024 x 768, but maybe that has to do with the monitor as well. This was a 21 inch Dell I was trying to hook it up to.
