Archive and install isn't really a headache, its no more work than doing an "upgrade" install, but it creates a new system rather than updating the files in your current one. I have done it on about a half dozen systems with good results on each. I did a couple upgrade installs and got some mixed results. If you are familiar with the Classic Mac OS option of a "Clean Install" archive is the same as that but it does copy over your "Application Support" files so you should not need to reinstall anything. I am running the same apps you are and haven't had any issues.

The systems I am using with 10.3.2 - Pismo G3 400, B&W G3 400 [3 of them], PowerBook G4 550, Power Mac G4 733. My experiences with 10.3 are very good, as a system its a very strong upgrade in terms of lots of good features and tweaks as well as performance increases.

I did an Archive and Install as part of troubleshooting some printing problems (turned out to be a corrupt Excel document). Very easy, but I did have to re-install some things (Palm Desktop, Spell Catcher X). I've only been running OS X for a couple of weeks all told, on a new AlBook 15" (1.25 GHz, 80GB drive, 768 MB RAM). I can't compare it to Jaguar, but I certainly like Panther!
