It actually depends on your Firewire enclosure. Older ones are only ATA-5 compliant so cannot go beyond 128GB. Newer (more expensive) ones are ATA-6 compliant and can handle some ungodly size of HD.

Subject: Larger-than-120GB Hard Drive formatting
Date: Fri, 02 Jan 2004 01:35:40 -0500

I bought a 180GB hard drive to go in an external firewire enclosure between
my Pismo and desktop Macs. Upon formatting for 1 partition using OS 10.3.1
on the Pismo, I got a partition of 128GB. I read where this is the case with
pre-mirror-drive-door G4 machines, but I thought I read that placing the
drive in an external firewire enclosure and running OS X would get around
the limitation.

Any tips on how to get this thing formatted to full capacity? Can it be done
in 1 partition on a different machine and returned to the enclosure? Do I
need 2 partitions?

Confused -
Sam
