I put the power cord and the "adapter" cords together to charge the battery. My 
question is: For what purpose is the adapter cord used by itself, without the line 
cord? 

Those power adapters come with a socketed normal AC style plug that can be removed and 
then the longer cord can be inserted as an extension.
