Always check out www.xlr8yourmac for user feedback: drive database, then
choose Powerbook 2000 and Expansion bay.

The Lite-on 24801 and Sony CRX-820 are easy to recommend, as they have a
switch on the controller board allowing you to set them to Master.

The Lite-on seems to be impossible to find at decent prices (occasionally on
ebay at very inflated prices, given that it's sought after), while the Sony
CRX-820 can be found NEW at avlogic.com for a reasonable $90; same price as
the faster Sony 830E, but the 830 doesn't have the switch to set it to
Master.

avlogic also sells the Lite-on 24802 at $84; it's faster than the other
model, but it doesn't have the switch.

All models are, IIRC, compatible with Panther and Jaguar, using Patchburn.

* also of note, avlogic sells the Toshiba SD-R6112 slim DVD-R/RW CD-R/RW for
a reasonable $165. Not a bad option for your Pismo for just $80 more.

I have the Sony 830E and like it, though it works best when set to Master:
in my case, I had to solder two pins on the expansion bay unit controller
board (as described at the xlr8yourmac site), which makes all drives mounted
in it show up as Master. It burns at 24x24x for CD-R and CD-RW, compatible
with iTunes and Disc Burner (modifying extensions in 9 and using Patchburn
in X).

All things considered, I'd definitely look at the Toshiba DVD burner.

Good luck.

Chris
