As a coincidence, in another list that I'm subscribed, someone mentioned that his computer was having serious problems, and after several trips to the shop (authorized Mac) he finally found by himself that it was a bad modem . If you can, try using a different one and see if it cures the symptoms.
Intresting. I have the standard apple 56 k modem, under warrenty.
But I have (kind of ) solved the problem. After a restart, the problem vanished!
