Is it possible that a trackpad on a Pismo would slowly die?
It's possible. But you might want to investigate software possibilities first. Boot on OS 9 (if you were using OS X). Boot with extensions off. IOW, eliminate / change the software, change the trackpad's settings, delete its prefs, etc to see if it continues behaving the same way.
