All of a sudden both my root and user password no longer work (OS 10.3.2).
I might have input the wrong pwd three times, although I'm not really sure
about that. After that I had the TiBook rest for a week as I was on
vacation and was hoping that the old password would work again (it used
to do the trick in Unix), but it doesn't, so I can't log on. I also have
File Vault turned on with password.

Ooohhh Bad News....This is why I *don't* like schemes like FileVault. If the container file gets corrupted or you forget your password, you're totally SOL.

FileVault: Good idea; Bad, BAD, HORRIBLE, AWFUL, EVIL implementation.

All of your data is in one file. One bit gets flipped in the wrong place: all your data goes Bye Bye.

What File Vault is is a single, password protected Disk Copy disk image; when you log in, it applies your password to the disk image, opens it up and mounts it as your home directory. Then when you log out or shut down, it dismounts the disk image, saves the changes and shuts down.

Anything untoward happens during this process, that disk image can be corrupted.

Apple's engineers, instead of building an encryption level into the file-system, whereby files are decrypted upon opening, then encrypted upon closing, took the easy way out, and did it this way.

It's a quick, neat hack, but it displays all the hallmark flaws of a quick, neat hack...most notably that it's utterly fail-unsafe: it has to work perfectly each and every time.

A bad way to design things like file encryption...

I've booted from the Panther disk following Apple directions, and reset both user and root password to new values, but I can't still log on. After this a new, uspecified user has appeared at the lon-on window,

That is not a good sign at ALL.

but can't use this either. Any suggestions or tricks to emply here? I'm
the only user of the computer, by the way.

Try doing an 'Archive and Re-install' from your panther disks. With luck this will fix things, but it's entirely possible that all your data is inaccessible now.

Not the answer you want to hear, I'm sure.
