I just started having a similar problem in my 900mHz G3 iBook. . .
Just out of curiosity, I swapped in the battery from my wife's 600mHz
iBook and it ran and charged it fine. . .
Sounds like a defective battery. You should bring it back to your nearest
Apple store or Apple dealer and they should replace it.

I hope my problem is that simple!

Laurent asked how long I'd had mine - I didn't get back because after having the problem for a week or so, my computer behaved for the last 3 days. Then this morning, when I started it up after it sat plugged in & charged & shut down all night (not common, I'd shut it down because I had to log out & back in anyway to activate some software), the "X" of doom is back!

Well, I got it the day before Christmas, as we stopped in to get a present for my husband - he ended up buying a much better one for me :-)

But it was the display model, so it had been on, plugged in, with this battery in it, for months - probably since the early days of this model (when did it first ship, last March?).

I'll hope it's the battery because then I don't have to lose the computer for any time, just swing into CompUSA & swap out the battery! I'll find out as I pass CompUSA next Friday on my way to my parents' for the long weekdn, & let all know if that does the trick.

Anne
