This is not a rant or complaint, but rather a point of information for anyone that might be keeping track.

My 14 month old 17" Aluminum PowerBook had a Hard Drive crash.

Luckily? I purchased AppleCare. The procedure is basically direct replacement of the HD. There is no option to upgrade my 60 GB to an 80 GB and data recovery is only allowed by special permission. AppleCare would allow me to send my drive for data recovery, but would not install a new drive until the crashed drive was returned to Apple.
