> From: "Joshua B. Watkins" > Hello to everyone, I just purchased a G4 1.0ghz 12"
> Ibook,

Josh:

1/ Don't capitalise the "i" in iBook. Capitalise the "B".

2/Go to the Apple Support site on the internet and have a look at the stuff that
everyone with a 1 GHz G4 iBook has submitted. Ignore the stuff about battery and
keyboard fit. In fact, ignore all of the rest of it, too. Read it but don't get too
excited. With any luck at all like the majority of G4 iBook owners you will never have
a problem with yours. (I have had my 1 GHz iBook since February and to date it has not
let a single application freeze, lock up or quit prematurely. The 1 GHz G4 is a
winning proposition, very stable and dependable.)

3/ Don't ever use the iBook on a soft surface like cloth that will prevent it from
cooling properly.

4/When you shut it down WAIT 20 to 30 seconds for the hard drive to stop spinning
before you touch it.

5/Rebuild permissions once per week.

6/Get a good pair of speakers and a CHEAP USB chiller like the acrylic plastic two-fan
ones that they sell at WWW.XOXIDE.COM for about $15.00 or less.

7/Don't leave your iBook unattended where it will become a temptation to a possible
thief.

8/ Take it with you when you go shopping for a case for it. Buy a good case but don't
be afraid to improve it if you thing the padding needs to be thicker, especially on
the bottom corners. American Tourister makes good luggage and GREAT iBook cases.

9/ The iBook is not for teenagers and chat rooms, unless they have been taught to
touch-type properly. You can't pound on this thing like you could on the old ADB Apple
extended keyboards. Kids pound.

10/ Partition your hard drive. Install a System on each partition so you can run
diagnostics from each on the other.

11/ Get an external USB 2.0 FireWire 400 3.5 inch hard drive case (about $40.00 on the
internet) and a fast 120 Gigabyte 7200 RPM IDE hard drive from Maxtor or Western
Digital with 8 megs of cache. Partition it too.

12/ Name your partitions: Loeb & Leopold. Fred & Ginger. Brown, DaSilva and Harris.
George, John, Paul & Ringo. Franny & Zoey. Lerner & Lowe. Jagger & Richards. Mason &
Dixon. Mary & Joseph. Cain & Abel. Captain Ahab & Moby Dick. Peter, Paul & Mary.
Hatfield and McCoy. Beenie & Cecil. Moose & Squirrel. Harpo, Chico, & Zeppo. Aimee
Semple McPherson and Elmer Gantry. Stoller & Lieber. Goffin & King. Pyramus & Thisbe.
Romeo & Juliet.

13/Don't let ANY version of Norton Utilities for Macintosh near your G4 iBook.
TechTool Pro 4 and the latest version of DiskWarrior will eventually save you a lot of
grief, and you don't have to use them very often.

14/ Run the latest version of System software and put in enough RAM to support it.
