You didn't state that "there obviously isn't a disc in there" so
obviously we must assume you may not know there can't be a disc in there,
especially as you get a crash rather than a dialog informing you of that.

As most of us don't know you, state the full circumstances including the
bloody obvious and remember even experts sometimes forget the simplest
solutions. 

Also, you said "any help" ... :)

Here's another spin. What if the underlying OS "thinks" there's a disc
still in there?
Have you checked the system log? If so, why didn't you give us that info
or lack thereof?
