Anyway, one can move small amounts of data via e-mail attachments.  One can
use FTP to move large amounts.

I assume your basic maintenance means access to the remote hard drive as
though it were local.  Without expert advice here, I would start researching
the Apple web site support area with terms like:  "remote sharing" and
"remote mac."
