I have an "old world machine" that uses a hack to run 10.3.5. The L2 cache is shut down to permit the startup. Once the machine is running I use "CPU director" to enable the L2 Cache. So Panther does utilize the L2 cache, at least in my case. I think that if it didn't need it then my machine would not be able to utilize it. The speed difference is quite obvious.

I meant to add that it is probably not the OS that "uses" the L2 Cache, but the machine itself, the hardware, that uses it.
