Dave,
Assuming you have OS 9 installed on your WS, you might solve your 
problem by restarting in OS 9, and then go back to OS X. That's 
worked for a number of other users.

Another option, though not as acceptable I'm sure, is revert back to 
OS 10.2.5 or 10.2.6. There appears to be a problem with update 10.2.8 
for some users of G3 PowerBooks.
