Larry,

FM became relational at v3 I believe. I use v4.1 at work, and one of its key features is cross-platform compatibility (I'm not sure which version this began with). I've used a PC server with Mac clients (using OS 9 or running under Classic w/OS X), and a Mac server with PC clients - works fine either way. Version 4+ also has the ability to host your db on a Web site, though the layouts are bare-bones without some programming in CDML.

Look here for a summary of updated features of v4:

If you plan to do any maintenance or updating of the db in the future, you'll certainly be better served by the newer version. Many improvements if you do any scripting, also improvements in layout and text editing, more options for calculation fields, and increase in maximum size of your dbs from 32 MB to 2 GB. That last feature alone may be the deciding factor, especially if you have any container fields bulking up the size of your db. HTH.

A few weeks ago I asked about FM II and newer versions.
I have now located FileMaker 2 Pro which can convert the
database file intact. However, I have a problem:

Which is the best, and why:

FileMaker 2 Pro or FileMaker 4.1 Pro running on an
iMac rev. B with Mac OS 9.2.2 ?????

Nothing advanced about the database, just 25000+ customer
records for vets surgery. I've helped them upgrade from a
Mac IIcx to an iMac. I will finishing the job tomorrow Sunday
and will have to make the version decision then.

Larry
