Yes, but I was responding to "Clamshell does not support dvd reading" and it should be some do not. It depends if the correct drive is installed. If he has a DVD drive, then he should be able to put in a DVD and then depending if auto play is on or not, watch the DVD or launch the DVD player and the watch the DVD.
