Apart from that, try resetting PRAM (Cmd-Opt-P-R at startup, hold until you hear 3 startup chimes), resetting the PMU (instructions will be in the manual, not familiar with the Lombard procedure), or doing a low-level format on the hard drive and testing it for bad sectors.

In those cases, a check with Disk First Aid revealed that the OS X partition had been corrupted but after a repair, the same seems to happen again albeit that the hard disk seems to be corrupted in different places.
If there is anyone out there who has had similar problems and was able to solve them: we are very eager to hear your suggestions!
