I sent this question in a couple of weeks ago and got no replies, so I'm
checking again: anyone care to venture an opinion on this?

Our story so far: My partner's trusty Pismo 400 malfunctioned. When it gave
the 3 beeps on startup and nothing else, I looked that up and read that it
meant no RAM that was recognized was present.

This Pismo has 2 256 Mb RAM chips, that have been working in it without
any problem for about 2 years until this happened. After a whole lot of
disassembly and reassembly I have established that:

either RAM chip works in the top slot;

both RAM chips have passed the test on the Apple hardware test CD when
installed in the top slot;

either RAM chip in the bottom slot causes the Pismo not to boot (even to the
test CD), whether or not there is a chip in the top slot.

So: what would cause this, and what is the best thing to do about it? Does
this mean the logic board is going? Does this problem presage other problems
to come?

Since both SODIMMs work in the top slot and neither works in the bottom slot,
I'd tend to suspect a faulty ram slot.

When a ram slot stops working there's often something wrong with the slot
itself. Inspect the bottom slot carefully for dust or dirt, corrosion, scorch
marks, bent pins or anything else that looks abnormal.

The good news is that the Pismo CPU and ram slots are on a daughter card, so
a damaged ram slot could be fixed by replacing the daughter card (they're
going for about $100 on eBay).

Hope this helps,
