I have been unable to get the batteries to respond, despite trying several different suggestions, including:
From the Apple website: "Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)". This had no apparent effect on the batteries.
I installed SlimBatteryMonitor. It tells me that the battery is charging, but stays at 0%. After a few minutes, it says "Power source not present".
I also followed the suggestions at:
