To accomplish Pismo function with lid closed:
1: attach USB mouse
2: close lid - Pismo sleeps
3: click/move USB mouse
4: Pismo wakes then runs without lid open (watch your energy settings for AC
power)

Things to consider:
1: you should dim the display entirely in case backlighting turns on
2: provide good airflow underneath i.e. got rubber feet?
3: [consider this step 1.5] may need a Monitor --> VGA port or TV --> s-video
initially for the Pismo's LCD display to disable when closed - then unplug the
extra monitor if it isn't needed

I did that with my pismo but I don't have it anymore so I am going by memory. I
ran DVD playback from the closed pismo (g3/500) to a TV or external monitor. It
would get hot, almost too hot, from so much optical drive usage and
decoding/playback.

The heat issues you are worried about would be mitigated by:
1: removing optical drive
2: removing battery
3: good airflow around the pismo

good luck! - stein
