I have both a 400 Mhz Lombard and a 400 Mhz Pismo which my wife uses, and we travel with, since it has an airport card. I was able to install and have been running OS X.2.8 on both machines for the last year. I have had no problem with either.
When I went to install OS X on the pismo (I did it first just to test X) I reformatted the drive and reinstalled 9.2.2 and then loaded OS X.2 on after updating to 9.2.2. With the lombard I just made sure it was updated to 9.2.2 and again had no problem doing a fresh install using my OS X.2 disc and then using software update to get to OS X.2.8. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones since I have no problems with OS X on these older laptops.
