second, no there isn't a way to do this, other than attach an external monitor, but check out 'Desktop Manager' I use it on my system (which has a 1024x768 display) and love it. <http://wsmanager.sourceforge.net/>

Despite the warning about it being 'alpha quality' I've NEVER had a problem with it, it's always worked rock solid for me.
