I've installed 9.2.1 on the iBook that I was given. However, I noticed that on the install CD, there is a folder for Firmware Update to update the Firmware to 4.1.7

I ran Apple System Profiler, but I couldn't find an entry that told me what firmware version was installed. What should I look for, and where? Should I just try to install the Firmware Update anyway?

It's in the ASP at the bottom under Production Info or something such. I think you could just run the updater. According to <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117> that is the latest update that could be needed, depending on model. You might want to check it to find out. The list is intended for OS X but it's applicable if you are only using OS 9.x

I've found information on the Apple website that will help me max out the RAM, and install an AirPort card in the iBook. What about installing a larger HD? Is that user do-able? Any limitations on size? I was thinking of 60 - 80 GB.

80 or maybe 100Mb is available. This is one of the hardest upgrades to do on any Mac (8500 memory is child's play in comparison). I counted about 60 screws that needed to be removed (and put back in). It will depend on the model but most are probably similar. There are several take apart guides on the web. I would print one out then use double sided tape to tape each screw in position as I removed it. I kept all the screws in order but even then it was hard to locate all the screw holes.
