I think you are right David. I think I may have just discovered one cause of hinge failure ;-( - possibly a major cause; getting cables caught when you close the book. My previously tight hinged Pismo now has 1/2" of play after catching a USB light cable.

I have a list of don'ts with books (particularly Pismos) that I wrote some years ago. When I get Tiger lets see if Spotlight can find it and I will add the above, and post it.

I've seen lots of broken hinges - I also know quite a few people who own
TiBooks, have owned them for quite a few years, and have pristine hinges. I
have no doubt that the design is flawed - but I also suspect that the
treatment of the computer plays a role.
