I don't think so, but sometimes a machine under this treatment can seem dead for a couple of days, for reasons unknown to me. I think the Apple shop *possibly* fooled him into thinking the problem was more serious that it really was. Powerbooks may sometimes appear dead, when the backup battery have been depleted as that, in some models at least, seem to be connected to PMU control or closeby services. A couple of friends had Apple South Africa tell them 2 machines ( a pismo and a PB G4) had problems needing expensive replacements, both which I fixed for fraction of that cost.
