Today, no. In the future, who knows. I know the EU countries have been
persuaded by the film and music companies to more or less ban p2p sharing

trade barriers. My friends are marketing their music trough these
channels and so will I if I ever release anything. I don't need record

There are economic models of distributing music directly to consumers using P2P. For many artists without a marketing budget backing them, it works. (This is sometimes covered in general interest business magazines.)
Also, academics are beginning to use P2P for sharing work and "scholarly communication". If the technology is restricted, it would be a shame.
