A very scary thing happened yesterday. First, I started hearing clicking
sounds, I guess from my hard drive. A while later, the computer started
locking up.

New clicking noises from hard drives are a bad sign. Usually it means the drives on it's way out.

Later still, when rebooting because of locking up, there were
chimes and the screen would go to grey, but nothing more. I put in the OS X
program CD but it didn't do anything better with that. Tried the TechTool
CD. Nothing.
Then, on reboot, I got a black screen with DOS-like text asking for ID
and password. The top line showed my name. It kept telling my password was
incorrect.

That sounds like you were booting into single user mode, except you shouldn't be asked for a username/password.

Were this a Linux system I'd say your bootlevel had gotten changed somehow, and you were logging in in terminal mode...I didn't know that was possible on a Mac...

That happened a few times and then the computer went back to
normal, where it is now. I backed up the hard drive, archived emails, and am
walking around it on tiptoe.

I'd plan on replacing the HDD asap. It's possible the drive isn't teetering on hardware failure, but like I said, *new* clicking noises aren't a good sign.
