You are correct. I found the culprit. The new pithhelmet has a feature which is "on" by default directing cookies to expire when the browser is closed. I have to either disable "site preferences" altogether or to uncheck the cookie expiration button. See here: http://culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmetSampleSecurity.php
