Yeah, doing test restores from backup is a very good idea; I once needed to restore a database I was working on and discovered the hard way that we'd been faithfully backing up garbage onto tape. In that case our scripts were messed up; but I've also seen backup tapes worn almost through that the owner claimed were good.
No, they weren't, much to his dismay. That cost him >$1500 to recover the data from the crashed hard drive instead.
(And he would have been happy to pay it at twice the price, the data was irreplaceable, and would have meant flushing several years worth of research.
On the bright side, this finally cured him of his paranoia about storing things on the servers. He was afraid that we might have a sever crash and he couldn't gegt to his data for a few days.)
