If it's only when it goes to sleep, it's a software issue;
possibly a firmware one, if they released a firmware
update for the TiBook.

What a dork, I've been updating Pismos left, right and centre,
but it never crossed my mind. Doh!

There is a 4.1.8 update which should be for the 400MHz,
and as I bought the computer from a warehouse clearance
my money is on a non-updated TiBook.
---
Remotely it could be a power manager board issue.
Have you reset the Power Manager per Apple's KB article?

reset-nvram in Open Firmware ???
---
It could be a flaky PRAM battery. The machine's old enough
to have that problem.

Could be, and I even have one from a broken TiBook. :o)
