I've always been struck by the fact that in Europe, the land of high taxes and "socialist" entitlements such as universal "free" health care, relatively inexpensive (as compared to the U.S.) university-level education, etc., many of things that are genuinely "free" in the U.S., such as free
internet access at libraries, some coffee houses, etc., are strictly
pay-as-you-go.

My favorite pet peeve is, in all but the biggest international hotels in major cities, the refusal to turn on the air conditioning or heat until a set date. Weather unseasonably cold? Too bad: you have to wait for the "official" beginning of winter before the heating system gets turned on.

The other one is those timer switches on hallway lights that light your way to your hotel room only if you sprint all the way. Try walking, and you'll do the last 30 seconds in the total dark, feeling your way along the
wall to what you hope is your door.
