There are things you can do to reduce lightning damage odds dramatically.
You need a good arrester ("protector") with 3-wire gas tubes and/or 'delta modules' at the service entrance. You MUST have a good ground. (Deity Help You if you are on a granite mountain...). You protect the power as well as the phone line WITH THE SAME GROUND POINT.
