know it will for well via XP, it should work OK via OSX, maybe a
little slower to render than ideal. I print mostly to pdf these
days, not as much to paper as my wife does, so it should work. I
grabbed all the drivers from the Australian support site already.
I think that 1000 pages is about 8 months of home printing, she
tries to do big print jobs for classes at the univ.
I'll post about sharing to OSX experiences.
Got it ALL working.
The ML-1740 is now $35 after rebates, possibly $10 less if you have
an additional coupon, at buy.com.
It is working with the Samsung (Australia) drivers for direct USB
printing under 10.4.1
drivers there are OS9 and earlier drivers too):
drivers: <http://www.samsung.com/au/support/productsupport/download/
Model_Select.aspx?type=Printer&typecode=15&subtype=Laser
+Printer&cmssubtypecode=1501&model=ML-1740&filetype=DR&language>
There are separate drivers for different OSX release, plus 8.6 and up
IIRC. Printer has USB and parallel both.
I have it on a Belkin 2-port USB printserver, which is a little
cheesy maybe but uses LPR.
To get it to print from OS 10.4.1 across the LAN, I had to install
some Linux Samsung GDI drivers, via:
Install the Samsunbacondi package:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/samsunbacondi/
Install this newer ESP ghostscript:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
ADDed it as an LPR printer, including entering the Belkin-specific
queue name of lp1 for port one or lp2 for port two.
For model choice, use ML-1210. Hopefuly the ML-1740 will be
supported soon, but everything seems to work fine with the 1210
driver so far.
This also means (I think) that I do not care if Samsung ever makes
new OS X drivers or not. I'm using 10.4.1 now.
I'm rather pleased! with the whole setup. thanks much to macosx.com
for info about the samsungbacondi driver.
