This means that there are two possibilities. 1) The person does not know all of the ins and outs of iCal and so it seems like a hassle to them. (A real possibility since--as with much about Mac-- many controls are not obvious; one has to play with it for a while to find them.) 2) They want attention.

In either case, the thing to do is to sit down with them; ask them to tell you exactly what they need in a calendar program and what it is about iCal that falls short; tell them sincerely things like "I trust your judgement on this," and "I want to make sure this works for you"; and give them your complete attention for an hour or so. You'll get the cooperation you need and gain a powerful ally.
