When my original pismo CD/DVD drive died, we replaced it with the Sony CRX820E. There are instructions to do this on the web, but I can't remember where. You'll need to keep your original tray, and install the Sony onto it, this was tricky, IIRC the hassle was more removing the old drive from the tray. We weren't able to put the Pismo faceplate on it, although theoretically it can be done. It works fine, and I have a CD burner onboard for the price of a replacement read only drive.
