Considering the 17" is massive compared to the 12" I would expect it to have
quite a bit of antenna wire in the lid, thus the range.
At 2.4GHz you don't use a long wire antenna. That is an antenna that
is, well, long. You use an antenna tuned to 2.4GHz so, depending on
the specific type of antenna it will be a fixed size. The length of
the cable feeding the antenna may vary but the antenna won't. AFAIK
most Macs with Airport capability have two antennas.
