I think it can get around the 8gig limit if you have a second drive
thats less than 8gigs.
You designate this smaller drive as a "helper" and all the limiting
files are stored there.
The majority of the System is located on your larger drive.

This limit is a hardware restriction of "Old World" machines.
Beige and earlier desktops and Wallstreet and earlier laptops have
an 8GB
limitation for the boot partition.
B&W and later desktops and Lombard and later laptops have no
limitation
for the boot partition.
At least for 10.3, which is what I run on all of these.
