Might seem silly, but have yolu tried a new cable between the two computers? It's possible that a bad wire's showing itself as causing trouble. (I had this same thing happen to me--and spent hours trying different things before it dawned on me to swap cables. Then I could get my two old powerbooks talking to each other.)
