Tony:
Am using a GoVideo VR3930 precisely for this. Probably not available
any more, but newer models should be good.
Extremely happy with the unit.
It has a firewire (aka iLink or IEEE 1392?) interface, so I can copy
directly from my sony camcorder, and the VR3930 controls the camera.
I haven't attempted to hook up directly to the Pismo.
Uses DVD-R and DVD-RW, think that the mac line currently uses DVD+R,
shouldn't be an issue with finished disks. Just means that you will
need stocks of different media if you get a more current mac. They
play in my Pismo, but my Pismo drive is a bit flaky so I occasionally
get dirty disk aborts. (further comment, listies?). Am about to
replace the (matsushita) drive in the Pismo EB with a burner soon.
Reviews mentioned quality issues with GoVideo units. Believe they
were directed at a previous model, and this one was put on the market
in early 2004. At any rate, I had an opportunity to buy this one at
Costco at a very good price, and I haven't regretted it.
I am finishing up transcribing 350 VHS tapes to DVD and will then
proceed to attack a stack of mini DV tapes. Some tapes play better
out of a panasonic deck that seems to be more tolerant of tracking
issues than the one
One feature I really like about this thing is the ability to
automatically skip all the ads on a commercial DVD and go directly to
the movie. Very nice with children's videos.

Advice please - I'm considering buying a combo DVD/VHS recorder so I
can transfer old VHS material (both personal and off-air TV) to a
recordable DVD format and thence onto my Pismo for viewing aware from
home. Any recommendations for best recordable DVD format and brand to
work in the Pismo DVD drive? I am UK-based. Thanks! TONY
