I had a similar problem . I do have separate lines for the modem and
TV (different rooms) and the splitter is outdoors. Making a long
story short, the local cable company uses a more expensive model than
the WalMart splitters and when mine went bad after 5 years, they
replaced it. The unit they use is larger, looks better made and is
connected to a heavy ground wire.
I talked to a cable tech (not with my cable co) about adding a cheap
splitter inside, to add a TV in the office with the computer, but he
suggested that I NOT use a cheap splitter. According to him, not only
do the splitters fail faster, the cause some problem with the signals
that make dropped connections more frequent. He suggested a trip to a
local commercial electronics shop to get a "High frequency, heavy
duty" splitter. Instead, I just didn't hook up the TV. :-) Just lazy,
I guess.

Dear Listers,
I recently hooked up my new iBook to high speed Internet cable via
a new cable splitter. The TV and DVD player is also on the cable
splitter. it worked find for 4 days. Then when I booted up, today,
on my laptop, there was no response from the modem and I could not
get online.
I called tech support at the cable co. and determined that the
cable modem worked fine, when it was the only thing hooked up to
the cable outlet (the TV and VCR/DVD player not hooked up). Tech
support told me that splitters wear out or burn out or something.
He said I should pay $30 and order another cable outlet to be
installed in the wall for the computer. Then I can use the old
cable outlet for the TV and DVD player.
His other suggestion was to get a good cable splitter from the
main cable office and see if it lasts longer than the one I bought
at Walmart.
Has anyone had of such a problem? What kind of work-around worked
for you? I'd rather not order another cable outlet, if possible.
I'd like the TV, laptop, and DVD/VCR to all work off one cable
outlet with a splitter.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jocelyn
