You CAN use the Griffin iMic to record directly without a preamp. The Griffin iMic has a switch on it that changes the input type for the source type, so that you CAN record directly from a cassette deck. If you are recording from a preamp you switch it the other way. If you forget, the sound will distort a lot! I use it all the time to record old tapes. -Bill M
