Alrighty there,

So I got this'ere Wallstreet II (G3 300/192 megs of RAM) - been using
it for surfing and text processing primarily; however, I decided that
there was no reason why I shouldn't use it for audio-related tasks of
all kinds, seeing as how there's no other computer at my disposal
presently, and I don't want intermediate solutions before I can get me
a more up-to-date rocket, and the longer I drag my feet, the more
powerful it is likely to be. Got me an external Emagic a 6|2 m beauty
and I adore it - and for that end, an upgrade or five wouldn't hurt
(already got a CardBus USB/Firewire adapter, and, incidentally, the
seller never warned me about the need for an external power source
that it requires). I am running OS X 10.2, though it appears I should
really dual boot with some pre-X version of Mac OS, using the latter
for applications that don't run on the former, and there are quite a
few of them about. I have to admit that as soon as I got this machine,
I overzealously formatted the hard drive and used the whole [measly
terror] of its 7.63 gigs on the cretinous assumption that I'd never
need the old non-UNIX OS, already a keen Penguinoid - Red Hat 5.2 and
the subsequent transition to Debian in the Potato epoch, so why
bother?

Little did I know. At any rate, no Classic apps will run, and there's
nothing to dual boot into. I'll be getting a 40-gig Travelstar pretty
soon, though (apart from that, an external IDE/ATAPI case for whatever
heinous purpose might tickle my fancy, and also a delightful little
relic for burning audio CDRs on low speeds and frightening my more
up-to-date visitors) - if I'm getting this correctly, I should
partition it to smithereens, install OSX into the first partition, the
Classic OS into the second, and use whatever remains for bulky file
storage; any caveats you feel worth mentioning?

But that's just the first question; I'll pester you with a few more
(actually, I wrote a long rant about my sudden and desperate urge to
upgrade in my LJ, involved, magniloquent and vitriolic - see the
latest entry of nicht_gefunden if you really want to). I'll relate the
more pressing issues here laconically, and we can proceed thenceforth.

 1) RAM. Thinking of 2 256-MB modules entitled m464s3254dts-l7a -
144-pin SODIMMS (allegedly with SPD support). Is there any chance I
might be overlooking some detail that will render them into two pieces
of lifeless silicon upon insertion into my mnemonically challenged
Wallstreet?

 2) My CDROM expansion module died and its corpse went missing in
action before I could perform an autopsy and a series of postmortem
foreign body implantation experiments. Will I be able to boot it from
some Firewire/USB device or the eagerly anticipated SCSI drive (by the
way, the seller only has a DB25 to DB25 cable; anyone here got a
fitting adaptor/cord they would trade for a Goa/Bob
Marley/noise/punk/other vinyl, or some other token of my eternal
gratitude, mayhap?)

 3) The battery seems to fit rather loosely - has anybody else
experienced that? Are there any other models of greater longevity that
will fit? If so, they cost a mint and a half?

 4) The Curse of the Darkened Screen. During bootup (and after the
initial apple logo vanishes), you can only see what's going on if you
use a torch or some such. Upon bootup, this can be rectified with a
single touch of the brightess regulator, but that's the only option.
If I accidentally close the lid, it goes into sleep mode and then
doesn't make the screen bright enough when it awakens. The brightness
regulator does nothing in those cases. Is there a cure?

 5) Processor upgrade. Is the 250-dollar upgrade to G4 500 offered by
wegenermedia.com the best and cheapest option, or have I missed
something? Will I be better off with an equal G3? Are there any better
ways?

 6) My space bar is seriously crippled. Are spares available, or do I
just buy a new keyboard/carry on like this, since I have got used to
it? Will a Pismo keyboard fit?

[the rest is deleted - the mailer daemon guards the 10 K threshold and
returned the original post in indignation]

Cheerio,

Mickey.
