It's all about money.
Software companies need to add features so they can persuade you to buy the latest release. Hardware companies need to persuade you that you need new features (video editing anyone?) so they can sell you faster hardware.

Planned obsolescence makes the wheels of industry turn (and produces some cool geek bling).
