My apologies for the blatantly OT post but I hope this will help some people
out there.

Hello ya'll, I'm sure nearly every one of us is tormented by unsolicited
spam (if only I could throttle the !@#!@# that send it, and the even more
stupid !$!#@# that buy from spam).

Anyway, it seems most spam I have received in the past little while has had
msn.com in their header. Depending upon your e-mailer you can set up "Rules"
(Outlook Express) or "Filters" (Eudora) to send crap directly to your trash.
Chances are you don't know anyone who uses msn.com as their e-mail source
(and, if they do encourage them not to ;).

... so you can safely create an "msn.com" filter (in the From line) that
will send all of the crap right into the trash (and, if you are creative
with your scripting, you can automatically send the message, header and all
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] where they'll use it to update spam
blocking filters).

In recent days I found that my real hotmail account was being bombarded by
spam that managed to slip through the "Bulk mail folder" (to the point of
being unusable... 10 spam: 1 e-mail (& my bulkmail folder was virtually
ineffective). Creating a filter in the on-line options (I don't use Outlook
Express for that account) called Filters to send msn.com appearing in the
>From address to the trash has disposed of 95+% of the spam.

The reason spammers are faking msn.com in their From addresses is that
Hotmail allows, by default, all mail "originating" in the MSN.COM and
HOTMAIL.COM domains through to a hotmail inbox. It seems their filtering
software is ineffective in catching these faked msn.com addresses (or else
they're being paid to allow the spam through which wouldn't surprise me
either) and thus spammers are using that technique now.

I have *never* received an e-mail from the msn.com domain that I wanted so I
have no fear whatsoever in banning all msn.com-related e-mail from my
accounts.

Similarly, you can filter e-mail coming from other domains this way, and you
can apply these filters to any of your e-mail addys that have spam problems
(I have .cz set-up as well... I don't know anyone in Czechoslovakia & that
top-level domain is a source of spam for me).

Good luck keeping your e-mail addresses as your own!!!

Eric.
