How much memory do you allocated to Photoshop. If your using it for long 
periods, maybe adding more memory to the program might help. Select the 
original icon for Photoshop, and select get info from the file menu. 
Select memory and bump it to say 200 megs. Leave your self some 
breathing room for the OS. for The second thing is throw out the 
preferences for Phototshop. They become corrupted easily. Go to your 
system folder and select preferences. Then select the adobe photoshop 
settings folder. In there you will find the preferences for Photoshop. 
Leave everything else alone. Trash them. That's what I would start out 
with.

As far as the system crashing under System 9, did you get updates for 
all your software and all your hardware before you updated the OS. 
System 9 is a long way from 8.6, and in most cases you need to get 
updates for just about everything.
