Pushing your Beige G3 beyond it's design limits! Did I really read that??
**No! its not possible.**
Its only limit is the 3 PCI slots(so many cards and nowhere to put them)
I bought 6-B&W G3's and 4-G4's a while back, all open box but working fine,
since I bought them all I got an OK deal and resold them. I could have kept
any one of them I wanted, and always planned on replacing my Beige
266MT(upgraded) with one of these newer systems. Sure, they had a few
things better, 100MHz Bus, DVD, USB FireWire, But in the end none could
match what my Beige offered.
I could always put a DVD in my Beige, add a USB/FireWire Combo card, and
boost my bus speed to 83Mhz if I wanted. So they didn't offer much more out
of the box.
What does my Beige give me.
4- 5.25" drive bays on the front, compared to ONE in the new towers(they do
have a room for a 3.5 zip though) an Audio/Video board with S-Video and RCA
connectors, built in SCSI, all the older ports, the same ZIF processor
socket, and an almost as easy access door.
Now for my Spec's
I replaced the 266MHz with a Copper 450 ZIF, Runs fine at 533Mhz (but I'm
the nervous type, and backed it down to 500)
I have a 40GB 7200rpm drive along with the 6GB (I actually had a 20GB up
until a month ago when I put in the 40. So I had the 20+40= 60GB total for a
while but didn't need that much so let my brother have the 20)
I only have 32+128+256= 416MB of Ram currently installed since that's more
than I need right now (I have had 768 in before, but again gave one stick to
my brother and another is now sitting in the parts box)
I upgraded the Built in Video to 6MB (Now not enough for new games)
So I installed a 16MB Rage128 Orion, along with my 8MB IX3d Ultimate Rez so
I could have 3 monitors (have since removed the Rez because I gave that
monitor to my Mom)
For the other PCI slot things change every so often, sometimes I have the
USB card in(but only have a gamepad and scanner that's USB, so don't really
need it till I get a new printer), sometimes its my TV Tuner, sometimes it
is just empty. I do also have a cheap FireWire card that I want to put in
sometime.
The 4 front bays are all filled with the following #1 Floppy(could remove
it since its rarely used), #2 SCSI Zip with my 40GB HD mounted above it, #3
original 8speed CD-ROM, and #4 with a Sony 8x4x32 CDRW($49)
Just think of all the external boxes I would have on a newer system.
So as you can see the Beige G3 is MADE to be expanded, There are even Dual
Processor G4 upgrades, and with all the upgrades still coming I'm not sure
when I will replace it.
I think it will probably be the Bus Speed and the lack of an AGP slot that
will eventually get me to upgrade. I enjoy my games, and right now an AGP
card out perform the PCI, NVIDA doesn't even make Mac PCI cards so ATI is my
only choice. From what I've seen the Radeon doesn't have enough benefits to
upgrade from the Rage128, so I'm waiting to hear the announcement about the
Radeon2 and if it will have a PCI model and what real world speeds will be.
When Apple releases a Dual G4 with at least two 5.25" front bays, DDR Ram,
and 200MHz or faster system bus. That will make me upgrade!
Sorry for such a long post but I heard blasphemy, and had to preach about
the powers of Beige

Chris have you heard that people put (maybe you should cover your eyes)
1024MB in the B&W towers and *shiver* 1536Mb in the G4's
