Having read comments about use or non-use of FreePPP (which I used
for several years), I'd like to know if anybody has experienced
problems with ARA refusing to 'let go' of the interaction between
itself and the modem? Details:
System: G3 300 d/top, OS 9.1, 128 RAM; ARA v 4.0
Modem: Global Village external
Disconnection of the modem from the phone line is no problem. I like
ARA's smooth operation and low demand but........read on.
Problem:
1. PPP termination usually takes 10 - 15 seconds after the phone line
connection has ceased, whether disconnected by the application, or
manually. Quite frequently, the GV control menu remains on screen
however. I now recognise this is as a sign of trouble to come when
trying to reconnect later. ARA seems to 'hang on' to its interaction
with the GV modem software. Force quit only works on the active email
application. A complete reboot is the only fix.
2. When waking from Power Save mode (not sleep), the G3 cannot crank
up the interface between ARA and GV. Scenario - I leave the computer
to answer the phone or something, that activity taking say 10 minutes
or more. The computer is not connected to the phone line. It puts
itself into Power Save mode (just the monitor and disk spin). I
return to the computer say 15 minutes later and try to connect. No
joy. Once again, a reboot is necessary.
Does anybody recognise these as a conflict between ARA and GV
software, or some other problem?
